How to Choose the Right UV Monomer
In UV-curable formulation systems, in addition to UV resins and photoinitiators, UV monomers are also a crucial component. UV monomers not only help adjust the viscosity of the system but can also impart or enhance various properties of the cured film, such as improving adhesion, enhancing flexibility, and increasing abrasion resistance. Therefore, the judicious selection and use of different monomers is an essential step in formulation design. When choosing UV monomers appropriately, one should take into account comprehensively the specific field of the development project, the type of substrate, and the required performance characteristics. The goal is to balance all these factors as much as possible and skillfully combine various monomers to achieve optimal results. Below, we’ll introduce some key factors to consider when selecting UV monomers for practical applications.
Multifunctional UV monomer
Today, we’re introducing polyfunctional UV monomers. Compared to mono- and di-functional UV monomers, polyfunctional UV monomers may have poorer dilution properties; however, they offer advantages such as low odor, low skin irritation, and fast curing speed, thereby partially offsetting the shortcomings of mono- and di-functional UV monomers. Polyfunctional UV monomers refer to those containing three or more reactive functional groups capable of participating in the curing reaction.
Bifunctional UV monomer
A difunctional UV monomer, as its name suggests, contains two reactive functional groups per molecule that can participate in curing reactions. These reactive groups are typically acrylate and methacrylate types; however, acrylates currently virtually dominate half of the market! Compared to their monofunctional counterparts, difunctional UV monomers not only exhibit faster curing speeds and significantly higher cross-linking densities in the resulting film, but also maintain excellent dilutability. As the number of functional groups increases, so does the molecular weight, and consequently, the viscosity rises accordingly. Therefore, these monomers have lower volatility and produce less odor.
Monofunctional UV monomer
A monofunctional UV monomer refers to a molecule that contains only one functional group capable of participating in the curing reaction. The types of functional groups include acrylates, methacrylates, vinyl compounds, vinyl ethers, and epoxies, among others.
