Release time:
2024-09-12 16:53
Pentaerythritol triacrylate (PET3A) is primarily synthesized via an esterification reaction between pentaerythritol and acrylic acid. The hydroxyl groups of pentaerythritol undergo esterification with the carboxyl groups of acrylic acid, forming ester bonds and thus yielding pentaerythritol triacrylate. As an important fine chemical raw material, pentaerythritol triacrylate is often used as a diluent, particularly demonstrating significant application value in fields such as UV-curable coatings and inks. Pentaerythritol triacrylate is also an essential monomer for UV-curable resins, widely employed in coatings, inks, adhesives, composite materials, and other applications. Due to its multiple reactive acrylate groups, it can be used in combination with photoinitiators to rapidly cure into a film upon exposure to ultraviolet or visible light, exhibiting excellent physical properties and chemical stability. By introducing different functional groups or chain segments into pentaerythritol triacrylate, it is possible to produce similar modified products such as pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PET4A) and ethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (5EO-PET4A). All these derivatives are chemically modified and expanded in their applications based on the core molecule—pentaerythritol.
I. Pentaerythritol Triacrylate (PET3A)
Pentaerythritol triacrylate, a trifunctional acrylate compound, typically appears as a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid. It is insoluble in water but exhibits some solubility in solvents such as chloroform and methanol. PET3A is relatively stable at room temperature, but it may decompose or even explode when exposed to high temperatures.
The main backbone of PET3A is pentaerythritol, a polyol that features four hydroxyl functional groups. In PET3A, three of pentaerythritol’s hydroxyl groups are replaced by acrylate groups. The PET3A molecule also contains one unreacted hydroxyl group. On the one hand, the presence of this hydroxyl group enhances the molecular polarity and reduces volatility; on the other hand, it can serve as a reactive site, enabling PET3A to be grafted onto other materials via a grafting process, thus making it suitable for the preparation of composite materials.
PET3A, owing to its excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, and light resistance, is widely used in fields such as coatings, inks, and adhesives.
II. Pentaerythritol Tetraacrylate (PET4A)
Pentaerythritol tetraacrylate is a tetrfunctional acrylate compound—a colorless or pale yellow, transparent liquid that typically appears as a colorless, viscous liquid. It is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbon organic solvents but insoluble in water and ethanol. It can also dissolve in chloroform and methanol, though its solubility is limited. Pentaerythritol tetraacrylate contains four acrylate functional groups, giving it high reactivity, especially during photopolymerization or thermal curing processes. It is stable under normal ambient temperature conditions when stored and used, but it is photosensitive and should therefore be kept away from light during storage.
PET4A is prepared by esterification of pentaerythritol with four molecules of acrylic acid. Pentaerythritol is a tetrafunctional alcohol possessing four hydroxyl groups, each of which undergoes esterification with the carboxyl group of acrylic acid during the reaction, forming ester bonds that link the four acrylic acid molecules together. The four acrylate groups contained in its chemical structure are the source of PET4A’s high reactivity, enabling it to rapidly participate in reactions during either photopolymerization or thermal curing, thereby forming a crosslinked network.
Pentaerythritol triacrylate (PET3A) is prepared by esterification of one part pentaerythritol with three parts acrylic acid. It features three acrylate functional groups and one unreacted hydroxyl group. The presence of the hydroxyl group enhances the molecule's polarity and reactivity while simultaneously reducing its volatility. Pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PET4A), similar to PET3A, differs in that all of pentaerythritol’s hydroxyl groups participate in the esterification reaction, resulting in four acrylate functional groups and no remaining hydroxyl groups. Consequently, PET4A exhibits higher crosslinking capability and reactivity.
Due to its higher cross-linking capability and reactivity, PET4A may offer advantages in certain applications that require a higher cross-linking density. However, compared to PET3A, the preparation of PET4A may be more complex and costly.
III. Pentaerythritol Tetraacrylate Ethoxylated with 5 Ethylene Oxide Units (5EO-PET4A)
Pentaerythritol tetraacrylate ethoxylated, also known as ethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, is a tetrafunctional acrylate compound that appears as a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid. Similar to pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, ethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbon organic solvents but exhibits poor solubility in polar solvents such as water and ethanol. Under normal conditions, the density and viscosity of 5EO-PET4A are slightly lower than those of unethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate. This is because the ethoxylation process improves the fluidity and dispersibility of the molecules, reducing the intermolecular interaction forces and thereby lowering the viscosity.
5EO-PET4A was further subjected to an ethoxylation reaction based on PET4A, meaning that ethoxy groups were introduced between the acrylate functional groups. These ethoxy chains are covalently bonded to the hydroxyl groups of pentaerythritol, where n represents the number of ethoxy units; the specific value of n depends on the degree of ethoxylation and the process conditions. The introduction of ethoxy groups alters the molecule’s polarity and spatial configuration, thereby influencing both its physical and chemical properties.
Due to the presence of acrylate groups, 5EO-PET4A also exhibits high reactivity. The introduction of ethoxy groups further enhances the molecule's polarity and reactivity, enabling it to rapidly participate in reactions during either photopolymerization or thermal curing, thereby forming a crosslinked network. At room temperature, 5EO-PET4A demonstrates good stability; however, under certain conditions—such as high temperatures or exposure to light—it may undergo decomposition or polymerization reactions. Therefore, care must be taken during storage and use to avoid the influence of these adverse conditions.
The ethoxy chain segment in 5EO-PET4A imparts superior properties such as enhanced flexibility and water resistance. This endows 5EO-PET4A with potential applications in certain fields that demand these characteristics.
IV. Conclusion
In summary, pentaerythritol triacrylate (PET3A) is an important chemical raw material. Its modified derivatives—pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PET4A) and ethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (5EO-PET4A)—each exhibit distinctive features in terms of chemical structure and application. Thanks to their unique chemical structures and outstanding performance, these compounds hold broad application prospects in a variety of fields.

Modified trimethylolpropane triacrylate
Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) is a high-performance chemical substance prepared by esterification of trimethylolpropane (TMP) with acrylates. It features three acrylate functional groups, making it a trifunctional reactive diluent. TMPTA plays a crucial role in advanced material systems such as UV curing, thermal curing, and radiation curing. Its high reactivity and multifunctionality promote rapid crosslinking and curing of resins, thereby enhancing the physical properties and chemical stability of the final products. To further expand its application scope and performance characteristics, we can chemically modify TMPTA—for instance, by introducing different functional groups or chain segments—thus yielding a variety of modified products, such as 3EO-TMPTA, 3PO-TMPTA, and 9EO-TMPTA. These modified derivatives are designed to optimize TMPTA’s performance by increasing chain length, adjusting polarity, or altering other physicochemical properties.
The Principle and Method of Ethoxy Modification of Reactive Diluents
Active diluents, as key components in epoxy resin curing systems, primarily function to effectively reduce the viscosity of epoxy resins, significantly enhancing their fluidity and wettability, thereby optimizing both construction operations and the curing process. Traditionally, these diluents have been composed mainly of monoepoxy and polyepoxy compounds; however, in practical applications, they often suffer from relatively high viscosity and unsatisfactory solubility. To overcome these challenges, researchers have innovatively introduced ethoxy-modification technology to improve active diluents, enhancing both their physical and chemical properties and enabling broader application possibilities.
Tri-functional acrylate diluent
Trifunctional acrylate diluents, as their name suggests, are compounds in which each molecule contains three acrylate functional groups. These diluents not only serve as diluents but also participate in the curing process, becoming an integral part of the cured film and thereby enhancing the crosslinking density and performance of the cured film. They typically exhibit characteristics such as low viscosity, high reactivity, and rapid curing. Trifunctional acrylate reactive diluents generally possess outstanding performance. Pentaerythritol triacrylate (PET3A) and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) are two of the most commonly used trifunctional reactive diluents in the photocuring industry.
