Common Defects in UV Wood Coatings (Part 7)
Release time:
2026-03-16 07:08
In the field of wood coating, UV wood coatings have become the preferred choice for many furniture and wood-product manufacturers due to their rapid curing, environmental friendliness, and energy efficiency. However, during actual application, UV wood coatings do not always deliver the desired results; various defects frequently occur, with particle formation on the coating film surface being particularly common and challenging to address. These seemingly minor particles not only compromise the smooth, refined texture that the coating should ideally exhibit but also significantly detract from the aesthetic appeal, thereby seriously undermining product quality and market competitiveness. A thorough investigation into the root causes of particle formation in UV wood coatings is therefore essential for effectively resolving this issue and enhancing coating quality.
I. Description of the Phenomenon
The paint film surface is dotted with raised particles of varying sizes—some as fine as dust, others large enough to be clearly visible to the naked eye. The particles exhibit a wide range of shapes: some are sharply angular, others are smooth and spherical, and still others are irregular and flocculent. Their distribution is entirely random; they may cluster in localized areas or be scattered haphazardly across the entire surface. When touched, the surface feels distinctly rough and uneven, much like fine sandpaper. Under illumination, each particle casts a tiny shadow, detracting from the paint’s otherwise delicate, smooth finish. In high-gloss coatings, these particles disrupt the mirror-like effect; in clear coats, they create a noticeable contrast in sheen compared with the surrounding film. In severe cases, the particles can even be scraped off with a fingernail, often leaving behind a minute indentation beneath.
II. In-depth Analysis of the Root Causes
1. Environmental introduction
(1) Dust in the air: Insufficient cleanliness in the paint booth allows airborne particulates to settle on the wet film; upon curing, these particles become permanently embedded either on the surface or within the paint film.
(2) Personnel activities: Fibers, hair, skin flakes, and other shed materials from operators’ bodies.
2. The paint itself is contaminated.
(1) Residue in the circulation piping: If the UV coating circulation piping is left uncleaned for an extended period, dried and hardened paint skin or gel particles will adhere to the pipe walls or pump housing, and these deposits will be carried into the coating equipment along with the coating fluid.
(2) Coating coagulation: Improper storage or expiration of UV coating can lead to resin gelation, photoinitiator precipitation, or pigment flocculation, resulting in soft particles that cannot be filtered.
(3) Container contamination: During drum opening or paint addition, dried paint from the edge of the drum lid falls into the paint tank.
3. Equipment Wear
Degradation of the roller in a roll coating machine, resulting in cracking and flaking of the rubber surface, or debris generated by wear of the pump seals in a spray coating machine.
III. Conclusion
In summary, the occurrence of particulate defects on the surface of UV wood coatings is the result of the combined influence of multiple factors, including environmental conditions, coating formulation, and equipment performance. From the management of the coating workshop environment and the standardized storage and application of coatings to the regular maintenance and servicing of equipment, every step is closely interconnected and must be given due attention. Only by comprehensively controlling these potential factors and implementing targeted preventive and corrective measures can we effectively reduce the incidence of particulate defects, ensure that UV wood coatings deliver high-quality, aesthetically pleasing film finishes, enhance the visual appeal of wood products, and meet the market’s demand for premium wood goods.
