The function of bio-based UV resins
Release time:
2026-08-27 23:14
The raw materials used to produce conventional UV‑curable resins and monomers are predominantly derived from non‑renewable resources such as petroleum and coal, resulting in high energy consumption and substantial carbon emissions. In contrast, bio‑based UV‑curable resins utilize renewable biomass—such as vegetable oils and lignin—as feedstocks. While retaining the rapid curing advantages of UV irradiation, they markedly reduce reliance on fossil resources and offer distinct benefits, including reduced curing shrinkage and enhanced recyclability of the final materials.
I. Reducing dependence on petroleum resources and promoting sustainable development
The core function of bio-based UV resins is to replace petroleum-derived feedstocks with renewable biomass. Due to their high yields, diverse varieties, low cost, and stable supply, vegetable oils have emerged as promising alternatives to petroleum-based resources. Formulations incorporating bio-based diluents can achieve significantly higher bio‑content levels, markedly surpassing those of petroleum‑based diluent systems. UV‑curable resins synthesized from various vegetable oils through epoxidation and acrylation exhibit excellent mechanical properties in terms of stiffness and toughness, making them a sustainable alternative to petroleum‑based products.
II. Reduce curing shrinkage and minimize coating defects
Traditional petroleum-based UV resins exhibit significant volumetric shrinkage during curing, which can readily lead to coating warping and cracking. Bio-based UV resins, by incorporating rigid benzene rings in synergy with flexible chain segments, effectively reduce curing shrinkage. Bio-based diluents containing long, flexible aliphatic chains can mitigate volumetric shrinkage during curing by increasing the spatial separation between polymer chains, resulting in a shrinkage rate far lower than that of petroleum-based systems.
III. Endowing Materials with Recyclability and Reprocessing Capabilities
Bio-based UV‑curable resins incorporating dynamic covalent bonds can decompose under specific conditions, offering advantages in recycling and reprocessing and addressing the limitation of petroleum‑based photocurable resins, which are difficult to degrade and recycle. Resin systems containing dynamic bonds can undergo chemical exchange reactions, enabling material repair and reprocessing.
IV. Realizing Applications in the Biomedical Field
Some bio-based UV‑curable resins exhibit excellent biocompatibility and can play a significant role in the biomedical field. Photocurable acrylate resins synthesized from natural oils have demonstrated favorable cell compatibility in cytotoxicity assays, making them suitable for biomedical applications such as implantable medical devices, wound‑healing coatings, and anti‑infective surface treatments.
V. Improving Coating Performance
Through techniques such as modification and compounding, bio-based UV resins can be endowed with improved weather resistance, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance. Organic fluorine‑modified bio-based UV resins derive their backbone from biomass feedstocks while incorporating both acryloyloxy groups that are UV‑curable and fluorinated functional groups that confer chemical resistance; the synergistic interaction between these moieties helps enhance the adhesion and chemical resistance of UV coatings. The application of certain bio-based UV resins in UV clear primers, UV white primers, and UV matte clear topcoats has already been validated.
VI. Conclusion
The benefits of bio-based UV resins are evident in several key areas: reducing dependence on petroleum resources, minimizing curing shrinkage, enhancing material recyclability, enabling biomedical applications, and improving coating performance. By substituting renewable biomass for petroleum-derived feedstocks, these resins lower the carbon footprint at the source; the incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds addresses the challenge of poor recyclability inherent in conventional photopolymerizable resins; and certain formulations achieve biocompatibility and coating properties comparable to those of petroleum-based products. Nevertheless, high production costs and lingering gaps in some performance metrics remain major barriers to their widespread adoption. As synthesis technologies continue to mature, the application scope of bio-based UV resins is poised to expand further.
