Characteristics of Bio-based UV Resins

Bio-based UV resins use renewable biomass—such as vegetable oils, lignin, and cardanol—as feedstocks, replacing conventional petroleum-derived materials. While retaining the rapid curing advantages of UV light, they significantly reduce reliance on fossil resources. As research advances, their performance has expanded from basic properties to functional applications, with early commercial deployments already emerging in areas like 3D printing, precision electronic components, high-performance medical consumables, and environmentally friendly coatings. Understanding the characteristics of bio-based UV resins helps clarify their technical strengths and limitations as alternatives to petroleum-based products.

I. Environmental Protection and Renewable Properties

The core advantage of bio-based UV resins lies in the renewability of their raw materials. These materials are primarily derived from animals, plants, or microorganisms, offering benefits such as low carbon emissions, renewability, and environmental friendliness. Plant oils, with their high yields, diverse varieties, low cost, and stable supply, represent a promising alternative to petroleum‑based resources. Formulations incorporating bio-based diluents can achieve significantly higher bio‑content levels, markedly surpassing those of petroleum‑based diluent systems.

Bio-based UV resins incorporating dynamic covalent bonds can degrade under specific physical or chemical conditions, offering advantages in recycling and reprocessing and addressing the limitation of petroleum-based photocurable resins, which are difficult to degrade and recycle. Some formulations also exhibit self-healing and reprocessability.

II. Rapid Curing Properties

Bio-based UV resins retain the core advantage of rapid UV curing. Bio-based acrylates can effectively participate in free-radical photopolymerization, exhibiting excellent curing performance under UV irradiation and achieving complete cure within a relatively short time.

Through molecular structure optimization, the curing performance of bio-based UV resins can be further enhanced. By tuning the functionality of carbon–carbon double bonds, rapid curing can be achieved under specific light sources, yielding cured films with excellent mechanical strength. Incorporating high‑functionality monomers increases the concentration of reactive groups in the resin, thereby accelerating the reaction rate.

III. Mechanical and Thermal Properties

Through techniques such as modification and compounding, bio-based UV‑curable resins can be endowed with improved weather resistance, abrasion resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance. By tuning the double‑bond functionality, they exhibit superior tensile strength and elongation at break, while also demonstrating excellent solvent resistance in a variety of solvents.

Bio-based UV resins can meet industry‑standard requirements. The resulting bio‑based UV resin coatings exhibit rapid curing rates, and their properties—including durability, hardness, and adhesion—satisfy relevant industry specifications. UV‑curable resins synthesized from lignin derivatives demonstrate mechanical performance comparable to that of commercially available petroleum‑based UV resins. In terms of thermal stability, certain bio‑based resins possess elevated decomposition temperatures, thereby fulfilling the demands of typical applications.

IV. Low Shrinkage Properties

Traditional petroleum-based UV resins exhibit significant volumetric shrinkage during curing, which can readily lead to coating warping and cracking. By incorporating rigid benzene ring structures to restrict molecular chain mobility, bio-based UV resins can effectively reduce curing shrinkage, thereby mitigating the coating quality issues associated with such shrinkage.

Organofluorine‑modified bio‑based UV resins derive their main-chain structure from biomass feedstocks, while their side chains incorporate acryloyloxy groups that are UV‑curable and organofluorine moieties that confer chemical resistance. The synergistic interaction between these features enhances the adhesion and chemical resistance of UV‑cured coatings.

V. Existing Limitations and Challenges

Bio-based UV resins still face several technical challenges. Conventional bio-based UV resins, with their limited carbon–carbon double bonds and reactive functional groups, exhibit slow curing rates and poor film durability and hardness—issues that significantly hinder their large-scale industrial application. Moreover, most bio-based UV resins suffer from elevated viscosity and inadequate mechanical properties. In addition, the production costs of bio-based UV resins are typically higher than those of petroleum-derived counterparts, which further constrains their widespread adoption.

VI. Conclusion

The characteristics of bio-based UV resins are evident in several key aspects: their renewable feedstock origin, rapid curing kinetics, tunable mechanical and thermal properties, low shrinkage, and potential for recyclability and biodegradability. Through molecular‑structure optimization and composite modification, their performance—such as reaction rate, hardness, and adhesion—has now met industry standards, demonstrating strong potential to replace petroleum‑based alternatives in fields like 3D printing, coatings, and adhesives. Nevertheless, insufficient reactivity, excessive viscosity, and relatively high production costs remain major hurdles to large‑scale industrial adoption. With the ongoing development of novel synthesis routes and advanced molecular design strategies, the overall performance of bio-based UV resins is steadily improving, paving the way for broader applications.
