Application areas of bio-based UV resins

Application areas of bio-based UV resins

Bio-based UV resins are derived from renewable resources such as vegetable oils, lignin, and eugenol. While retaining the rapid curing advantages of UV light, they significantly reduce reliance on fossil‑based feedstocks. Through sustained R&D in recent years, these bio‑based UV resins have progressed from laboratory studies to early commercialization, finding applications across multiple sectors, including 3D printing, coatings, electronic packaging, adhesives, and medical devices. Their expanding scope of use stems, on the one hand, from advances in molecular design and modification technologies, which have steadily brought their mechanical properties and thermal stability closer to those of petroleum‑based counterparts. On the other hand, the incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds endows these materials with self‑healing and reprocessability, addressing the longstanding challenge of poor recyclability inherent in conventional photopolymerizable resins.

Process Requirements for Bio-based UV Resins

Process Requirements for Bio-based UV Resins

The preparation and application of bio-based UV resins involve multi‑step process control, spanning from raw material synthesis to curing and shaping. Unlike petroleum‑based UV resins, bio‑based systems must address specific challenges, such as the inherently low reactivity of natural feedstocks and significant variations in processing routes among different raw materials. Mastering the process requirements at each stage is essential for ensuring resin performance and product quality.

How to Control the Curing of Bio-based UV Resins

How to Control the Curing of Bio-based UV Resins

The curing control of bio-based UV resins involves the coordinated optimization of multiple factors, including light source selection, energy settings, environmental conditions, and process parameters. Unlike petroleum-based UV resins, bio-based systems exhibit distinct curing behaviors due to the structural diversity of their raw materials—such as vegetable oils, lignin, eugenol, and others. Some bio-based resins also possess dual-curing characteristics, enabling performance tuning through stepwise curing. Mastering these key control points is essential for ensuring consistent quality in coatings and molded parts.

Key Considerations for Using Bio-based UV Resins

Key Considerations for Using Bio-based UV Resins

Bio-based UV resins replace petroleum-derived feedstocks with renewable resources, reducing the carbon footprint while retaining the rapid curing advantages of UV technology. However, compared with petroleum-based UV resins, bio-based systems have specific requirements regarding storage conditions, application processes, and cure control. Properly addressing these factors is essential for ensuring consistent resin performance and product quality.

Formulation Control of Bio-based UV Resins

Formulation Control of Bio-based UV Resins

The formulation design of bio-based UV resins is a critical step in determining product performance, involving the systematic compatibility of oligomers, reactive diluents, photoinitiators, and various additives. Compared with petroleum-based UV resins, bio-based systems present greater complexity in formulation control—structural variations among natural raw materials, performance optimization of bio-based diluents, and the need for process‑compatibility all require tailored approaches during formulation development. Through judicious formulation adjustments, it is possible to achieve a balanced combination of mechanical properties, curing rate, and shrinkage resistance while maintaining a high bio‑based content.

Main Processes for Synthesizing Bio-based UV Resins

Main Processes for Synthesizing Bio-based UV Resins

The synthesis of bio-based UV resins uses renewable biomass resources as feedstocks and introduces photocurable reactive groups via chemical modification, enabling rapid curing under ultraviolet irradiation. Compared with petroleum-based UV resins, the synthesis of bio-based UV resins must address challenges such as the low reactivity of natural raw materials and their complex molecular structures, typically involving multi-step reactions like epoxidation, acrylation, and polyurethanization. Depending on the type of feedstock, the synthetic routes can be categorized into major pathways, including vegetable oil modification, natural phenol modification, and lignin modification.

Raw materials used in bio-based UV resins

Raw materials used in bio-based UV resins

The defining feature of bio-based UV resins is that their raw materials are derived from renewable biomass resources, rather than conventional petroleum‑based chemicals. After chemical modification, these biomass feedstocks can be functionalized with photoreactive groups, enabling the resin to cure rapidly under ultraviolet irradiation. To date, a variety of biomass sources have been successfully employed in the synthesis of bio‑based UV resins, including vegetable oils, natural phenolics, lignin, and organic acids, among others.
