Construction Process for UV Wood Finish
Release time:
2026-04-07 23:25
The application process for UV wood topcoats encompasses the entire sequence of operations, from completion of primer treatment to final curing of the topcoat. A standardized application procedure is the foundation for ensuring consistent topcoat quality. Unlike primer application, topcoat application places greater emphasis on surface appearance and imposes stricter requirements on process parameters and operational details.
I. Primer Layer Inspection and Treatment
Prior to applying the topcoat, a thorough inspection and treatment of the primer layer is required. First, examine the primer surface for defects such as sagging, orange-peel texture, and bubbles; any imperfections in the primer will be magnified after the topcoat is applied. Next, perform fine sanding of the primer to eliminate minor surface irregularities—high-gloss topcoats demand even finer sanding. Once sanding is complete, the workpiece surface must be meticulously cleaned to remove all dust; incomplete dust removal can result in particle defects in the topcoat.
II. Preparation of the Construction Environment
The application of topcoat coatings is subject to stricter environmental requirements than that of primer coatings. During topcoat spraying, the work area must maintain a high level of cleanliness, and the spray booth should be equipped with an air filtration system. Ambient temperature and humidity can affect the leveling and curing performance of the topcoat; therefore, these parameters should be adjusted to appropriate ranges prior to application. In addition, the spraying operation requires a well-designed ventilation and exhaust system.
III. Topcoat Application
The appropriate coating method should be selected based on the workpiece geometry and production volume. For flat panels, roll coating is the most commonly used method; precise control of the coating application rate is essential, as undercoating can result in poor leveling, while overcoating may lead to sagging. For irregularly shaped workpieces, spray coating is the primary method, requiring a constant gun-to-workpiece distance and uniform travel speed. For high-gloss finishes on large-area flat panels, curtain coating is the ideal choice.
IV. Flow and Curing
After coating is completed, the workpiece must undergo a leveling period to allow the coating to spread evenly and eliminate any application marks. The leveling area should be kept clean to prevent dust from settling on the wet film surface. Once leveling is complete, the part proceeds to the UV curing stage, where the curing energy must be adjusted according to the type and thickness of the topcoat. Insufficient energy can result in incomplete curing, while excessive energy may lead to yellowing. For high-gloss topcoats, nitrogen-protected curing can be employed to enhance surface cure performance.
V. Cooling and Inspection
After curing, the workpiece surface temperature is relatively high and must be cooled to ambient temperature to prevent adhesion during stacking. Following cooling, a quality inspection is conducted: under appropriate lighting conditions, the coating surface is examined for defects such as sagging, orange peel, bubbles, and particulates; a gloss meter is used to verify that the gloss level meets specifications; and random sampling tests are performed on adhesion and other performance characteristics in accordance with product requirements.
VI. Conclusion
The application process for UV wood topcoats comprises five main stages: inspection and treatment of the primer layer, preparation of the application environment, topcoat application, leveling and curing, and cooling and inspection. Compared with primer application, topcoat application places greater emphasis on surface finish and environmental control, with stricter requirements for operational details. A standardized application procedure is the foundation for ensuring consistent topcoat quality; only by rigorously following each step can the decorative and protective functions of the topcoat be fully realized.
