Common Defects in UV Wood Coatings (Part 9)
Release time:
2026-03-16 23:14
In the field of wood coatings, UV wood finishes have become the preferred choice for many manufacturers thanks to their rapid curing, environmental friendliness, and high efficiency. They not only impart an aesthetically pleasing appearance to wood products but also provide excellent protective performance. However, in practical applications, UV wood finishes are not always flawless; one of the more challenging issues is brittleness caused by inadequate curing. A brittle coating film not only detracts from the overall aesthetic appeal of the product but also severely compromises its functional performance and durability, posing significant challenges for manufacturers. Therefore, a thorough investigation into the phenomenon of brittleness resulting from poor curing in UV wood coatings—and the underlying causes—is of great practical significance for resolving this problem and enhancing product quality.
I. Description of the Phenomenon
Although the paint film achieves the required hardness after curing, it lacks adequate toughness. When struck or scratched with a sharp object, the film readily develops cracks that radiate outward or form a network pattern. During handling, assembly, or service, even minor impacts can cause chipping at the edges or at the point of impact, leading to flaking and spalling of small fragments. When the workpiece is bent or subjected to compressive deformation, the paint film cracks accordingly, with the fissures typically oriented perpendicular to the direction of the applied load. In subsequent machining operations such as sawing or mortise-and-tenon jointing, the paint film along the cut edges tends to flake off in large pieces. Although the surface gloss of a brittle paint film may appear normal, applying firm pressure with a fingernail will produce a faint cracking sound. Under microscopic examination, a fine network of microcracks can often be observed within the paint film itself.
II. In-depth Analysis of the Root Causes
1. Excessive energy
When the UV energy exceeds the critical threshold required for coating formulation, the crosslink density becomes excessively high, resulting in an over-dense three-dimensional network. In such a network, segmental chain mobility is severely restricted, causing the paint film to lose its ability to absorb and dissipate impact energy, thereby becoming rigid and brittle.
2. Accumulation of Shrinkage Stress
UV curing is the rapid transformation of liquid monomers into a solid polymer, accompanied by volumetric shrinkage. If a single coat is applied too thickly, this volumetric shrinkage cannot be compensated by the flow of the coating film, resulting in substantial tensile internal stresses within the film. Even the slightest external force can then trigger cracking.
When the shrinkage and flexibility of the primer and topcoat are mismatched, shear stress develops at the interface, which can likewise lead to brittle cracking of the topcoat.
3. Formulation Factors
The coating formulation contains an excessively high proportion of rigid components and an insufficient proportion of flexible components, or an excessive amount of crosslinking agents resulting in overly dense crosslinking points.
III. Conclusion
The issue of poor curing and embrittlement in UV wood coatings arises from the combined effects of multiple factors, including UV energy, shrinkage stress, and formulation. From precisely controlling UV energy to prevent excessive crosslinking caused by overintensity, to appropriately optimizing coating thickness to minimize the buildup of shrinkage stress, and further to refining the coating formulation to strike a balance between rigid and flexible components, each step must be handled with meticulous care. Only by comprehensively understanding these influencing factors and implementing practical, effective improvement measures can we effectively address the problem of poor curing and embrittlement in UV wood coatings, ensure the production of paint films with excellent toughness and durability, provide reliable protection for wood products, enhance product competitiveness in the market, and drive the wood coating industry toward higher quality standards.
