Method for Determining Various Performance Indicators of UV Inks (Part 1)

As an essential component of modern printing technology, accurately measuring the performance indicators of UV inks is crucial for ensuring the quality and stability of printed materials. Thanks to their unique curing mechanism and excellent printing performance, UV inks have found widespread applications in various fields, including packaging, advertising, and publishing. However, to ensure that UV inks can meet diverse printing requirements, we must conduct rigorous and precise measurements of their various performance indicators.

I. Color, Hue

Compare the sample with the reference standard by means of side-by-side scraping, and check whether the color of the sample matches that of the reference standard. The scraping method is a commonly used technique. It involves taking small amounts of both the reference standard ink and the sample ink, mixing them thoroughly, and then applying them separately onto standard test paper to form thin, uniform ink films. Subsequently, visually inspect the color differences between the reference standard and the sample ink layers and make an assessment accordingly.

II. Fineness

The fineness of ink particles and their dispersion state are determined using a scraper fineness meter, with the results expressed in micrometers. Specifically, after diluting the ink, its particle size is measured using a scraper fineness meter.

III. Uniformity

Evaluate the uniformity of the ink by examining the overall appearance of the printed material. You can check whether the ink distribution on the print is even and whether there are any spots, streaks, or uneven coloration.

4. Viscosity

The viscosity of the ink is evaluated by measuring the rotational resistance of the rotor as it spins in the ink using a rotary viscometer. Pour a sample of the ink into the measurement cup of the rotary viscometer and start the instrument. Record the rotational resistance of the rotor as it spins in the ink, then calculate the ink’s viscosity value based on this rotational resistance.

V. Liquidity

The test for fluidity is typically conducted by observing the distance that ink flows under specific conditions. Ink fluidity is expressed as the diameter of the cylindrical shape formed when a given volume of ink sample, subjected to a specified pressure for a certain period of time, spreads out. This method provides an intuitive reflection of the ink’s flow properties.

VI. Dryness

1. Visual Inspection Method: The ink’s dryness can be determined by observing the glossiness and color changes on its surface. A dried ink typically exhibits a smooth, glossy surface, and its color will appear more vibrant.

2. Friction Test Method: Gently rub the ink surface with your finger or a cotton cloth and observe whether any ink residue remains. If no ink residue is left behind or the ink does not flake off, it indicates that the curing effect is good.

3. Hardness Test Method: Use a hardness tester to test the surface of the ink and observe the reading on the tester. The cured ink should exhibit sufficient hardness.

7. Glossiness

The measurement is performed using a photoelectric glossmeter. Under illumination from a specific light source, the ratio of the amount of reflected light from the sample to that from a standard surface is measured—this ratio represents the glossiness of the ink. This method allows for precise measurement of ink gloss and can be used to evaluate ink quality.

8. Impact Resistance

Impact resistance tests are typically conducted using methods such as the drop-ball test or impact testing machines. In these tests, samples coated with UV ink are subjected to impact, and the ink's adhesion or cracking behavior is observed. If the ink remains stable under impact, it indicates good impact resistance performance.

IX. Conclusion

In summary, the physical performance specifications required for UV inks are the foundation that enables them to be widely used in the printing industry and deliver outstanding performance. By precisely controlling these specifications, we can ensure that UV inks maintain stable, high-quality output under a variety of printing conditions.
