Handling Poor Conditions in UV Gel Nail Polish (Part 3)

Bubbling refers to the formation of circular air bubbles of varying sizes on the surface of gel polish after it has cured. This issue is closely related to application technique and the condition of the nail surface. Unlike wrinkling or shrinkage, bubbling is more often caused by air entrainment during application or residual moisture on the nail. This article will discuss strategies for preventing bubbling as well as methods for addressing it once it occurs.

I. Preventive Measures for Foaming

1. Use the one-way brushing technique. When applying color gel and top coat, brush 2 to 3 strokes from the nail root toward the tip, starting each stroke in the same direction—do not brush back and forth. Brushing back and forth can trap air within the gel, leading to bubble formation. When brushing in one direction, hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the nail surface and glide it gently across.

2. Ensure the nail surface is thoroughly dry. After cleaning the nail surface, wait a few seconds to allow the cleaning solution to fully evaporate. If any visible moisture or residual cleaning solution remains, blot it dry with a dry cotton pad. When applying products after prolonged nail soaking, pay particular attention to ensuring the nail surface is completely dry.

3. Control the curing pace appropriately. When using LED lamps, first cure for 5 to 10 seconds to allow any bubbles a brief window to rise and escape; remove the nail plate to inspect, gently tap the surface to help break any remaining bubbles, then continue curing until the coating is fully set. This method is suitable for situations with few and minor bubbles.

II. Treatment Methods After Foaming Occurs

1. Treatment of surface bubbles: If the bubbles are confined to the coating surface and have not ruptured, use a cleaning pen or brush tip dipped in a small amount of topcoat adhesive to gently dab over the bubbles, ensuring the adhesive fully covers them, then cure under a lamp. The bubbles will be sealed beneath the newly applied topcoat, restoring a smooth, even surface.

2. Handling through-bubble defects. If bubbles penetrate from the color coat layer to the surface, sand down the affected area, wipe it clean with a cleaning solution, and then reapply the color coat and topcoat. If there are numerous bubbles distributed over a wide area, it is recommended to remove the entire coating and redo the work.

III. Conclusion

The key to addressing bubbling lies in mastering application techniques and maintaining optimal nail-bed conditions. Applying polish in a single, consistent direction helps minimize air entrapment; ensuring the nail surface is thoroughly dry prevents moisture from vaporizing; and carefully controlling the curing speed allows bubbles sufficient time to escape. Once bubbling occurs, surface bubbles can be covered with a top coat, while through-bubbles require sanding and reapplication. In most cases, bubbling stems from improper application habits, and making adjustments to technique can lead to significant improvement.
