UV wood coatings are widely used in the coating of furniture and wood products due to their rapid curing, high gloss, and excellent physical properties. When the wood moisture content is too high, during the curing and heating process after coating, water vapor escapes outward; however, some of the vapor that does not have time to escape becomes trapped within the rapidly forming paint film, forming microscopic water droplets that lead to whitening. When applying thick coatings, the rapid evaporation of solvents from the surface layer increases the resin concentration and viscosity, while the underlying solvents are trapped and unable to escape smoothly, resulting in the formation of microscopic voids within the paint film. These voids scatter light, leading to haze. To address this issue, the choice of a diluent with an appropriate evaporation rate should be based on the coating system and application conditions, in order to strike a balance between surface drying and bottom-layer release. The leveling temperature should be maintained within an optimal range to prevent the surface from sealing too quickly. For thick-coat applications, it is advisable to apply multiple thin coats instead of a single thick coat, or to appropriately extend the intercoat waiting time, ensuring that the solvents in each coat have fully evaporated before applying the next. Prior to curing, sufficient standing time should be allowed to provide ample opportunity for solvent vapors to escape.

During the application of UV wood coatings, common issues such as whitening, haze caused by incomplete solvent evaporation, and precipitation of film-forming components severely compromise coating performance and product quality. These problems can be effectively addressed through measures including controlling wood moisture content, regulating ambient humidity, optimizing the coating process, selecting appropriate coating formulations, and strengthening control over film curing.
