In the industrial coating process for UV wood coatings, although roller application is the preferred method for flat-panel wood products due to its high efficiency and uniform film-forming capability, several common defects still arise during production—most notably roller marks—which significantly compromise the aesthetic quality of the finished product. This paper provides a detailed discussion of solutions to the issue of roller marks in UV wood coatings and briefly outlines strategies for addressing other related defects.
I. Maintenance and Calibration of Mechanical Precision
1. Regularly inspect the geometric accuracy of the rollers: Over long-term operation, coating rollers and metering rollers may experience uneven wear or slight bending, resulting in an inconsistent linear pressure distribution at the contact interface with the web. It is recommended to establish a routine inspection regime, using specialized tools to measure the roundness and straightness of the rollers, and to promptly repair or replace any components found to be out of tolerance. For rollers that have already sustained significant wear, precision grinding should be employed to restore their geometric accuracy, thereby ensuring uniform contact pressure across the entire roller surface.
2. Controlling roller runout: Wear of the roller bearings or eccentric mounting can cause radial runout, resulting in periodic impacts on the wet film during rotation. The condition of the bearings should be inspected regularly, and worn bearings replaced promptly. Maintain clean roll gaps: If dried paint particles or contaminants become lodged in the gap between the leveling roller or coating roller, they can locally widen the gap, resulting in longitudinal, through-going thick marks on the sheet. A standardized cleaning procedure should be established, with thorough cleaning of the rollers and roll gaps at the end of each shift. During production, if any foreign matter is detected entering the system, the machine must be stopped immediately for cleaning to prevent the continuous occurrence of defects. A filtration device can also be installed at the inlet of the paint supply system to trap impurity particles that might otherwise enter the roll gap.
III. Optimization of Coating Transfer Performance
1. IV. Precise Setting of Process Parameters
1. Properly set the nip gap and roller speeds: The gap between the coating roller and the metering roller determines the coating film thickness and should be precisely adjusted according to product specifications. The speed ratio between the rollers affects the efficiency of paint transfer; excessively high speeds may result in incomplete transfer, while excessively low speeds can reduce production efficiency. It is recommended to determine the optimal parameter combination through process trials and maintain these settings consistently during production.
2. Control of coating thickness uniformity: The paint supply rate should be kept constant to prevent variations in coating thickness caused by fluctuations in the paint level. An automated paint supply system combined with a liquid-level control device can be used to ensure stable paint delivery between rollers. For manual paint replenishment, standardized operating procedures should be established to minimize human error.

Roll marks are the visible manifestation of periodic fluctuations in coating film thickness during the coating process, with their root causes spanning mechanical precision failures, feed system variability, and poor paint transfer efficiency. A deep understanding of the mechanisms underlying roll mark formation, coupled with systematic process optimization, will enable enterprises to achieve the dual objectives of stable quality and enhanced efficiency in roll coating production, delivering high-quality products that truly stand up to rigorous inspection.
