Introduction to Eco-Friendly UV Resins

Driven by both increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the green transformation of the manufacturing sector, the UV resin industry is undergoing a profound shift from conventional petroleum‑based systems to environmentally friendly alternatives. Eco‑friendly UV resins, while retaining performance advantages such as rapid curing and high crosslink density, achieve end‑to‑end environmental sustainability through raw material substitution and formulation optimization. This paper reviews eco‑friendly UV resins, focusing on their solvent‑free nature, bio‑based feedstock substitution, absence of harmful additives, and recyclable design.

I. Solvent-Free and Low-VOC Characteristics

The defining feature of eco‑friendly UV resins is their solvent‑free formulation. Conventional UV resins are either high‑solids or solvent‑free systems that, throughout application and curing, do not incorporate volatile organic solvents such as benzene‑based compounds or esters, resulting in virtually no VOC emissions during the curing process. This characteristic sets them apart from traditional solvent‑based resins: whereas conventional systems rely on solvent evaporation to form a film, releasing substantial amounts of organic solvents into the atmosphere, UV systems achieve curing through photochemical polymerization initiated by ultraviolet light, with all components participating in crosslinking or becoming integral parts of the coating film.

The environmental benefits of solvent-free formulations are evident across multiple stages: no harmful emissions during production, no need for exhaust‑gas treatment equipment during application, and no risk of solvent residues in the finished product. This makes eco‑friendly UV resins particularly well suited for applications such as furniture coatings, children’s toys, interior décor, and food packaging—sectors that impose stringent limits on VOC emissions and residual solvents.

II. Substitution of Bio-based Raw Materials

Traditional UV resins primarily rely on petroleum-based feedstocks, and one of the key development directions for environmentally friendly UV resins is to replace fossil-derived raw materials with renewable biomass. Biomass resources such as vegetable oils, lignin, and rosin can be chemically modified—through processes like epoxidation and acrylation—to yield reactive resin systems capable of participating in photopolymerization.

Soybean oil–based UV resins are among the most extensively studied systems. By esterifying epoxidized soybean oil with acrylic acid, it is possible to obtain bio‑based UV‑curable resins with excellent reactivity, whose degree of cure meets the requirements of industrial applications. These resins not only exhibit renewable characteristics but also possess ester linkages in their molecular chains, which endow the cured products with potential biodegradability, thereby facilitating the recycling and disposal of waste materials.

The industry has already launched a range of bio-based, certified UV‑curable resins, produced from renewable biomass feedstocks to further reduce the carbon footprint and align with the long-term trend of sustainable industrial development. At present, bio‑based UV resins have been put into practical use in sectors such as adhesive tapes, electronics, and wood coatings.

III. Formulation Design Free of Harmful Additives

Environmentally friendly UV resins are formulated to avoid ingredients that are harmful to human health and the environment. In conventional polyurethane acrylate synthesis, organotin compounds are commonly used as catalysts; however, organotins can potentially disrupt the endocrine system. Eco‑friendly formulations employ alternative catalytic systems to ensure the absence of intentionally added tin compounds. With regard to inhibitors, the selection of alternative inhibition systems helps reduce skin irritation and the risk of sensitization.

In the selection of reactive diluents and functional monomers, eco‑friendly resins avoid highly irritating monomers and instead employ alternative formulations, thereby significantly reducing skin‑contact risks for operators while maintaining crosslink density and adhesion.

IV. Recyclable and Biodegradable Design

Another important direction in the development of environmentally friendly UV‑curable resins is to incorporate reversible chemical bonds into their molecular structure, thereby endowing the cured products with the ability to be recycled or subjected to degradation. Conventional UV‑curable resins form highly crosslinked, stable network structures that are difficult to recycle, resulting in persistent waste upon disposal.

By introducing dynamic covalent bonds into polyurethane–acrylate systems, the crosslinked network can undergo depolymerization and repolymerization under mild conditions, enabling material recycling and reprocessing. While maintaining excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability, these materials also exhibit self-healing capabilities and recyclability, thus providing a viable technological pathway for the sustainable development of photocurable 3D‑printing resins.

Plant-oil-based UV resins, owing to the presence of ester groups in their molecular chains, can undergo hydrolytic degradation under specific conditions, thereby preventing long-term environmental pollution from discarded resin. This degradable‑design approach offers a solution for environmentally sound lifecycle management of UV resins.

V. Conclusion

The environmental benefits of eco‑friendly UV resins are reflected across multiple dimensions, including solvent‑free and low‑VOC formulations, the substitution of fossil‑based feedstocks with bio‑based alternatives, the absence of harmful additives, and recyclability and biodegradability. Solvent‑free formulations address VOC emissions at the source; bio‑based technologies reduce reliance on fossil resources; the elimination of hazardous additives ensures the health and safety of both operators and end users; and recyclable designs align with environmental concerns regarding waste management. These technological approaches are not isolated but rather complementary, collectively driving the UV resin industry toward greater greenness and sustainability. As environmental regulations continue to tighten, the scope of applications for eco‑friendly UV resins is set to expand further.
